Mini Research

Abstract
For the last few years, there have been increasing rates of international students travelling to Britain to study. However, students of pre sessional English course at London Metropolitan University encounter problems when they first come to Britain. In order to investigate, a Questionnaire was administered to the students’ regarding accommodation, transportation, and social life. The research findings were used to address the problems that have been discovered.

Background
In recent times the number of foreign students coming to London Metropolitan University has increased tremendously.
Most International students believe British standard of education is well recognised all over the world and for that reason foreign students choose to pursue further studies at London Metropolitan University to enable them to acquire broad knowledge, also prepare them to have a better command over their field of study and the world challenges as well.
It is a fact that international students travel to Britain to study for educational purposes but it is also beneficial for the institutions in Britain because international students pay full fees.
In spite of this, foreign students coming to live and study in Britain for the first time still encounter a lot of difficulties, it is therefore necessary to discover what the students problems are and what measures to use to address their problems.

Aims
The Aim of the survey was to investigate the problems that students pursuing pre sessional English course to London Metropolitan University normally encounter when they first come to Britain .More specifically we aim to explore students’ problems regarding accommodation, transportation, social life and other means.
The research results would be used to address the problems that have been discovered or maybe provide suggestions to the university authorities.
METHOD
The research was carried out by means of questionnaire that was used to obtain information for the purpose of the analysis.
Research population
The population of the study were students of pre sessional English course at London Metropolitan University. Out of one hundred fifty students, a total number of sixteen students were selected. The sample of sixteen students were selected based on a random sampling method technique comprising 4–student from green class, 3- from gold class, 3 -from silver and 3each from the rest the classes.
There were an overwhelming majority number of respondents who were female students whereas only a minority were males.
The age range of the students were between 20 to 32.Students from a wide variety of different countries like Tunis, Bangladesh, Gabon, Dubai, Indonesia and others took part in answering the questionnaire.
The Questionnaire helped us to find out that vast Majority of the respondents studied Academic English. However, very few of them study general English. It is also true that almost all the students have difficulties in learning English language which was revealed through the research conducted.
Findings
The questionnaire revealed that (94%) of the students, which were the vast Majority of the students studied Academic English. However, very few of them study general English.
Regarding the difficulties that students on pre- sessional English course at London Metropolitan University have with learning of English, slightly more than one third of the students (38%) mentioned that they have problem with writing.
Less than one third of the students (31%) said that they have problem with Grammar. Whereas exactly quarter of the students (25%) said that they have problem with reading.
Concerning where students on pre- sessional English course at London Metropolitan University normally have receive treatment when they are not well, nearly half of the students visit the GP, whereas exactly quarter of the students (25%)visit the hospital. But less than (20%) of the students go to the pharmacy for treatment. However, just small numbers of students (6%) treat themselves.
Below is pie chart for your explanation for medical treatment

Analysis of results
The results revealed that vast Majority of the students (94%) on pre-sessional English course at London Metropolitan University studied Academic English. However, very few of them study general English.
These results suggest that international students have difficulties with learning English. Slightly more than one third of the students (38%) mentioned that they have problem with writing.
Less than one third of the students (31%) said that they have problem with Grammar. Whereas exactly quarter of the students (25%) said that they have problem with reading.
This could mean that international students have difficulties with learning English.

Surprisingly an overwhelming majority number of students live in rented houses. However, less than (10%) 0f the students live in their own property.
Perhaps this means that the students’ hostels are few or very expensive or students feel more comfortable to live in the rented houses

Fortunately, most of the students live in the place which is convenient for them to reach the university. A significant number of students (94%) responded positively that the place they live in is convenient for transport to and from the university. although just (6%) of the students mentioned that from where they live in to the university is not convenient.

Generally, most of the students travel by either tube, or rail or bus. Roughly half of the students mentioned that they usually travel to the university by tube except just small number of students who travel by bus.
This results, might indicate that most of the students live from the university
Interestingly, a great Majority number of students (94%) think that transport in Britain is good. Except few numbers of students (6%) who said that transport in Britain in London is bad. This suggests that transport in Britain is quite reliable.
Almost half of the students receive treatment from GP; On the other hand, exactly quarter of the students (25%) visit the hospital. But less than (20%) of the students go to the pharmacy for treatment. However, just small numbers of students (6%) treat themselves. This could be individual preference as to where to go when one not well. Considerably, vast majority number of respondents (88%) mentioned that to live in Britain is very costly. Although (12%) said that is not costly to live in Britain. This might be high standard of living in Britain.
Unfortunately most of the students (69%) declared that they encountered difficulties in an attempt to open bank account. However, exactly quarter of students (25%) did not encountered problem in their attempt to
open bank account. This could mean that student need much support from the school authorities to open Bank account in Britain.
A significant number of students (81%) responded positively that they find it easy to make friends or socializes with others in Britain. A small number of students remarked that it not easy to mark friends socializes with others in Britain.
Interestingly, Greater numbers of students (63%) like British culture while less than one third of the students who don’t like British culture. This could indicate that British culture is good and most people prefer it.
Finally overwhelming majority number of respondents (88%) mentioned that British weather does not favour them. this might be as that most if the international students come from tropical counties. However, less than (15%) 0f the students said that British weather does not favour them
Conclusion and suggestions
To sum up this, I would like to suggest to the University authorities to reduce the cost of the tuition fee in order to enable international students to afford to pay their fees because according to the research findings the standard of living in Britain is very high. It would be beneficial if the university will have their banking system since international students face lot problems in terms of opening bank accounts. Finally, I suggest that the school should own their surgery or hospital so that students can receive treatment at school.

Significance of Mini Research
The mini research has given me insight of the real research work because of the use of academic words, collocation words, how to construct sentences, vocabulary and others by the assistance of the Delick and Simon
